paris: about auteuil & paris

• The Maison de la Radio is a few blocks north of the apartment with its interesting museum and presentations of sound recordings; other museums in the area are the Musee Henri Bouchard (25, rue de l’Yvette; www.musee-bouchard.com ) and Fondation Le Corbusier (8-10 Square du Dr-Blanche; www.fondationlecorbusier.asso.fr) .Streets known for their famed Hector Guimard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hector_Guimard) art-deco buildings of the early 20th century are in abundance.

• After wandering around the shops and boutiques in the village d’Auteuil you can explore the magnificent Bois de Boulogne on foot, right from the apartment, or rent a bike and cycle through this verdant oasis. A former hunting ground for the kings of France, the Bois de Boulogne became a public park in the second part of the 19th century when its designer, the Baron Haussmann, decided to create similar parks in Paris to those he admired in London. The Bois de Boulogne on the west side of Paris and the Bois de Vincennes on the east were thus created. The Bois de Boulogne has become the fashionable place for West Paris to spend its leisure time. It contains the Parc de Bagatelle with its outstanding Rose Garden, the Pré-Catelan, the hippodrome and the Jardin d’Acclimatation. Bordered by the very residential areas of Auteuil, Neuilly and Boulogne, it boasts beautiful walkways for pedestrians, 28 kms of horse trails, 15 kms of bike trails and rowboats on the Lac Inférieur, hence a favorite destination of Parisian walkers, cycle enthusiasts and equestrians and Sunday strollers.

• The Roland Garros Stadium and tennis courts lie on the edge of the Bois de Boulogne, about a 10-minute walk from the apartment. Open for visits all year although when the French Open is on, it becomes more of a challenge to obtain entry.

Paris is a marvelous city to visit and hardly needs an introduction. Full of excitement, charm, exquisite food adventures and cultural venues, it is above all eminently walkable and its public transportation system is marvelous. Metros, RERs, taxis and busses crisscross the city in no time. The apartment is very near La Tour Eiffel, Les Invalides, les Tuileries and le Louvre. A little further away lie Montmarte, the Père Lachaise Cemetery and Montparnasse area. The Musée d’Orsay is only 4 stops from the apartment on RER-C line; Notre Dame is a 10-minute bus ride. Treat yourself to a ride on the Bateaux Mouches, as lovely at night as in the day, or take a walk through the Luxembourg Gardens. For an exotic treat, visit the Paris Mosque with its delectable tea room, then wander through the Jardin des Plantes for a leisurely stroll. You can rent bikes and cycle around Paris, a particularly marvelous experience early on a Sunday morning when the city is still sleeping, or ride the balloon high in the air in the Parc André Citroen, just over the Mirabeau bridge for a different kind of excitement. You can either eat out in the many, many wonderful eateries or come home to your comfortable abode and cook yourself (or heat up!) a meal à la française. Two hours from the castles of the Loire Valley and the D-Day beaches, only an hour from Monet's charming Giverny, a quick 3-hr high-speed train ride from Provence, you'll feel incredibly at home in this jewel of an apartment; you'll only regret not being able to stay longer.
