The arrière-pays as it is known to the French is a marvelous grouping of villages pittoresques, astounding aqueducts, gorges, and canyons; the nearby Mediterranean and home to les Corniches, those breathtaking James-Bondian curving roads. The city of Nice is only 40 minutes away with its sparkling beach, the Matisse museum, the old town, and the romantic Cours Saleya; Cannes is but 25 minutes directly south, Antibes 35 minutes away, and the beautiful St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat only 45. Slightly further afield is elegant Monte-Carlo in the principality of Monaco, and from there it’s only 15 minutes to the Italian border. Closer to home is the beautiful village of St-Paul-de-Vence where Picasso spent much of his time; the eclectic modern art museum la Fondation Maeght; Renoir’s house in Cagnes-sur-Mer, and the incomparable gardens of the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. Le Bar-sur-Loup is wonderfully located between the Mediterranean and the Basses-Alpes, a perfect spot from which to tour this highly coveted corner of France.
